History

Kia Motors is South Korea’s oldest car manufacturing company which was founded way back on 9th June, 1944. According to Kia Motors, the word “Kia” has directly come from Sino-Korean words “Ki” (which means “to come out”) and “a” (which stands for Asia).  It could be roughly translated as “arise or come out of Asia” or “rising out of Asia”. And as on date for car enthusiast who are out to finance a new car, various Kia models are often the first choice.
The company began its operations in 1944 as a manufacturer of steel tubing and bicycle parts that were made by hand. Since then it has operated the country’s Chaebols. In 1952 Kia underwent a name change.

Previously it was known as Kyungsung Precision Industry which manufactured bicycles (starting 1957), trucks (1962) and finally cars (1974).  The company successfully commissioned its first automotive assembly plant in the year 1973 called the Sohari plant. In 1986, Kia Motors entered in to a joint venture with American car making giant Ford and manufactured car models like Pride and Avella for North America as well as Ford Festiva and Ford Aspire for Australasia.
